This is why calling the fringe right and the Tea Partiers ‘crazy’ isn’t helping. Not only does it associate good folks who are neuroatypical with some nasty fucking bigots, but it dismisses what they say without addressing it. They are nasty, racist, sexist, classist assholes who have been deluded by some ugly rich bigoted media assholes that having a black president is going to destroy the country. Calling them ‘crazy’ doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of what they are and what they do.
I Googled and was offered:
[After Martion Lawrence had a stroke] What is happening in Hollywood that a guy that tough will be on a street waving a gun, screaming, “They’re trying to kill me!!” What’s going on? Why is Dave Chappelle going to Africa? So whats happening in Hollywood? Nobody knows. The worst thing you can do is call somebody crazy. It’s dismissive. “I don’t understand this person, so they’re crazy” That’s bullsh!t. These people are not crazy, they’re strong people. Maybe their environment is a little sick. -Dave Chappelle(from interview with Inside The Actors Studio)
So I started watching Dave Chapelle on Inside the Actors Studio [Original Airdate: February 12, 2006] — and while he does use “crazy” colloquially from the get-go (though not in really negative ways), which did not fill me with optimism (and ~27:00 we get a clip from The Nutty Professor where he’s doing extended fat joke riffs, which I just felt ill at), the above quote really does happen ~33:00 (teased ~28:00):
Lemme ask you this: What is happening in Hollywood that a guy that tough [Martin Lawrence] will be on the street waving a gun, screaming, “They are trying to kill me”? What’s goin’ on? Why is Dave Chappelle goin’ to Africa? Why is Mariah Carey make a hundred million dollar deal to take her clothes off on TRL? Is it—a weak person cannot get to sit here [on Inside the Actors Studio] and talk to you. Ain’t no weak people talkin’ to you. So what is happening in Hollywood? Nobody knows. The worst thing to call somebody is “crazy.” It’s dismissive. “I don’t understand this person, so they’re crazy.” That’s bullsh!t. These people are not crazy, they strong people. Maybe their environment is a little sick.
At which point I stopped watching :)
